Oki was part of the continent! ??
About 250 million years ago, the Japanese archipelago, including the Oki Islands, was part of a continent called Pangea. The proof is "Oki gneiss". It can be seen at Choshi Dam.

Oki appears!
It is said that the prototype of the current island was created by volcanic activity about 6 million years ago.
A small island that looks dark is made of basalt. It is a crater trace that erupted about 3.5 million years ago.

Global warming has arrived!
The Oki Islands are thought to have become the four islands they are today, about 10,000 years ago.

A whopping 200 burial mounds are distributed.
Nine front and rear burial mounds have been confirmed in Dogo. Both seem to have been built in the Kofun period, in the 6th century.

Dance of the Heian period! ??
The lotus dance of Oki Kokubunji is performed every year on April 21st. Currently, seven dances are performed. Bugaku and silent masques that came along with continental culture from the Nara period to the Heian period. It is said that the lotus dance dance has a shape close to that of the time.

The green rock tells us that Oki was the bottom of the lake long ago.
It is believed that the volcanic activity that began about 26 million years ago caused the Oki Islands and the Japanese archipelago to move away from the continent, creating a lake with water in the depressions.

Speaking of obsidian! ??
The Stone Age about 30,000 years ago. Obsidian was used as a material for stone tools such as knives and yajiri. Obsidian from Oki is said to have been transported to the Kinki, Shikoku, Hokuriku regions, and Itoigawa area in Niigata prefecture, mainly in the Chugoku region, due to its good quality.

From the Jomon period! ??
From ancient times, God had a mysterious power and was supposed to dwell in mountains, trees, stones, etc. without showing up. Oki still cherishes such places. And the festival that invites God as a guest and prays is still held.

Taika Reform "Asuka period".
"Taika" is the first era name in Japan.
It is said that the national reforms carried out in 645 began using the titles "Japan" and "Emperor".
It is believed that the Miki family, the priest of Tamawakasu-mei Shrine, was a national builder.

The emperor is in the Oki Islands! ??
Emperor Go-Toba and Emperor Go-Daigo were exiled to the Oki Islands during the Kamakura period.
Ushibuchi is said to have been started by the villagers to comfort Emperor Go-Toba.

Saigo Port is known for its good nature, and prospered as a port of call for Kitamaebune ships from the middle of the Edo period to around 1897.

Seawater flowed into the lake and became the sea.
It is believed that about 16 million years ago, it became the Sea of Japan as it is today.
The rock that tells us that is "diatomaceous earth." Recently, it is used for bath mats, coasters, spoons, etc.

Oki was the Shimane Peninsula! ??
It is said that the Oki Islands were connected to the Shimane Peninsula by land due to the drop in sea level during the Ice Age about 20,000 years ago. Oki was not a remote island all the time, and was connected to and separated from Honshu many times. That is where the Oki Islands' unique ecosystem was born.

Paddy rice cultivation that is said to have entered the Oki Islands in the late Yayoi period. The rural landscape, which changes color depending on the season, is a gift of many years.

The oldest surviving history book in Japan, "Kojiki," and the second oldest, "Nihon Shoki." It is said that Dogo, the parent island (Hahajima) of Mitsugo no Shima, was called "Okinoshima", so the whole island was called "Oki".

The beginning of sake brewing.
A semi-agricultural and semi-fishing island that is blessed with abundant spring water and abundant sea affected by the Tsushima Warm Current.
